What data we collect

Not collected Personal information

  • Personal information (name, email, phone number)
  • User accounts or sign-in credentials
  • Analytics or usage tracking
  • Advertising identifiers
  • Raw location data
  • Any information about your device

Local only On-device data

All data storage is on-device only using GRDB (SQLite):

  • Prayer logs (when you manually log prayers)
  • Bookmarks (when you save Qur'anic verses)
  • Preferences (calculation method, notification settings)
  • Quran reading progress
  • Azkar counter state
  • Ramadan goal settings

This data stays entirely on your device, is never transmitted, and can be deleted anytime via Settings › Data Management.

Location data

When you grant Location (While Using App) permission, your location is used only to calculate prayer times and Qibla direction. Location is never stored, transmitted, or shared. If you deny permission, you can manually enter coordinates in Settings.

Permissions & usage

Location (While Using App)

Why: Calculate prayer times and Qibla direction. Required? Optional, recommended for accuracy. Retention: Not retained.

Notifications

Why: Send prayer time reminders and Ramadan alerts. Required? Optional; per-prayer toggle.

Apple Watch sync

Why: Sync prayer logs between iPhone and Apple Watch. How: Local sync only via WatchConnectivity (Wi-Fi/Bluetooth) — never servers.

Third-party services

When you stream Qur'anic audio or download translations, the app may contact Quran Foundation API (primary) or alquran.cloud (fallback). These services may log IP addresses as part of normal web server operations. We never transmit your identity, location, or preferences to them. For fully offline use, download translations and audio packs ahead of time.

GDPR & CCPA

  • Right to access: Your data exists only on your device.
  • Right to delete: Delete all data via Settings › Data Management.
  • Right to portability: Export as JSON via Settings › Export Data.
  • Data transfers: No data leaves your device.

Since we collect no personal information, CCPA is satisfied. There is no data sharing or sale.

Security & children's privacy

Data is stored locally using iOS/watchOS Data Protection encryption. Sakinah is appropriate for all ages; we collect nothing, so COPPA is satisfied.

Common questions

Anything else
on your mind?

Why are my prayer times different from my local mosque?

Prayer times vary by calculation method. Sakinah supports 13 methods (MWL, ISNA, Egyptian, Umm Al-Qura, and more). Your mosque may use a different method or apply local adjustments.

Go to Settings › Prayer Times › Calculation Method to match your local standard. When precision matters, always confirm with your mosque.

How do I change the Asr calculation (Shafi'i vs Hanafi)?

Go to Settings › Prayer Times › Asr Calculation and select your madhab. Standard (Shafi'i / Maliki / Hanbali) uses shadow ratio 1:1; Hanafi uses 1:2.

Why is the Qibla direction wrong?

Calibrate your device's compass: move your iPhone in a figure-8 pattern. Also check that Location (While Using App) permission is granted in Settings. If issues persist, restart the app.

How do I download Quran translations & audio for offline use?

Translations: Quran tab → settings icon → Translations. Select what you want and tap Download.

Audio: Settings › Quran › Reciter Voice › Download for Offline. Pick a reciter; expect a few hundred MB.

Does Sakinah really collect zero data?

Yes. No personal data, no analytics, no tracking, no advertising identifiers. Everything stays on your device. See the Privacy section for the architectural details.

Is there a subscription or premium tier?

No. Sakinah is completely free with every feature unlocked — no subscriptions, no in-app purchases, no ads, ever. Worship shouldn't have a paywall.

How does iPhone ↔ Apple Watch sync work?

Data syncs automatically via WatchConnectivity when both devices are nearby. Open Sakinah on your iPhone to trigger a sync. The sync happens locally over Wi-Fi/Bluetooth — no cloud services involved.

How do I delete all my data?

Go to Settings › Data Management › Delete All Data. This permanently removes all prayer logs, bookmarks, preferences, and counter state from your device. Uninstalling the app does the same.

Can I test Ramadan features outside Ramadan?

Yes — go to Settings › Ramadan › Date Override to simulate any day of Ramadan. Useful for trying the fasting tracker, khatm planning, and Ramadan-specific notifications year-round.
